U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan granted prosecutors’ request to jail El Chapo for life plus 30 years, the additional years for firearms offenses, in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday, saying he had committed ‘overwhelming evil’. He ordered him to forfeit $12.6billion to the US government. The 62-year-old broke his silence to make a statement, his first throughout his months-long legal saga. He complained about not being allowed contact with his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro (right), a a strict condition that has been imposed since before the trial began and will remain in place – and of the conditions at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Witnesses said she helped him escape Mexican prison in 2015 by acting as a liaison between him and his associates.
