NYC Heat Wave: How NYPD Officers Stay Cool (While Wearing All That Gear) | NBC News York

NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison talks Marc Santia through how members of the force stay cool in stifling heat like the type we’ve seen in the last few days, often while saddled with masses of gear.

More on the heat wave: The worst heat wave of the year has seized the region, threatening three consecutive days with temps in the mid-to-high 90s, though it’ll feel more like a sauna, with stifling humidity making it feel like 104 degrees at a minimum.

Con Ed expects power demands to rival all-time weekend peaks — and that’s on the heels of the blackout that affected tens of thousands across midtown and upper Manhattan.

Tim Cawley, president of Con Ed of New York, assured the public Friday that the infrastructure related to last weekend’s blackout is fixed. He also said the utility expects demands to reach anywhere from 11,500 to 11,900 megawatts, explaining one megawatt translates to roughly 1,000 homes.

Those numbers would rival — or potentially surpass — the highest weekend demand the utility company experienced in August 2016 of 11,500 megawatts.
